J. Peña Plumbing, Napa, Calif., recently conducted a process hot water installation—for sanitation and clean-up—by installing six Navien NPE240A tankless water heaters. Owner Jose Peña and two of his techs performed the installation, serving a new building facility — the 10,000-sq.-ft. Honig Winery barrel room in Rutherford, Calif.

“Here at Honig Winery we pride ourselves as a sustainable winery and try to find way to conserve energy. When the topic of tankless came up, it sounded like a good idea. Tankless unit have a much smaller footprint,” says Dick Weilandt, facilities manager, Honig Winery.

The mechanical engineer originally spec’d out a 2,000,000 Btu boiler with a large tank, which seemed too excessive. “When the possibility of having multiples tankless units with the ability of future expansion and not to mention redundancy, it looked like a no-brainer,” says Weilandt.

To date, the system works great, but it has only been in operation a couple of weeks. “The real test will take place around April/May when a lot of hot water is needed.” says Weilandt.
